LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES SELECTS MULTI-MODE ADSL CHIPSET FROM CENTILLIUM TO ADDRESS RAPIDLY GROWING JAPANESE DSL MARKET Centillium's CopperFlite ADSL Chipset is Building Block in Lucent Stinger LS DSL Access Concentrator Platform for Japan FREMONT, Calif.,
January 15, 2001 - Centillium Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: CTLM), innovator of broadband communications technology, today announced that Lucent Technologies has selected its CopperFlite Multi-mode Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) chipset for deployment in Lucent's newly-developed Stinger LS DSL platform for the Japanese market. Lucent began deploying the Stinger LS--which is based on the company's original Stinger DSL platform but is adapted to meet the needs of the Japanese market--in September 2000. Centillium's CopperFlite Multi-mode chipset is the only field-proven ADSL chipset that conforms to the Annex C standard for Japan.
Annex C addresses the unique requirements for operating with Japan's existing telecommunications infrastructure, in which pulp insulation is commonly used and ISDN service is the norm. Pulp insulation and the prevalence of ISDN service significantly increase the adverse effect of crosstalk from other lines in the loop bundle, a serious barrier for the wide deployment of ADSL in such environments. Centillium's innovative and patented technology is the foundation of the Annex C standard that overcomes the crosstalk problem and enables Japanese carriers to deploy ADSL in the same bundles that contain ISDN.
"In order to adapt our highly successful Stinger DSL platform for use in Japan, we had to consider the unique requirements of the Japanese market," said Ashok Dhawan, President of Next Generation Access, Lucent Technologies. "One of the biggest technological challenges in Japan is the crosstalk interference between the large installed base of ISDN lines and newer ADSL lines. Centillium is the only field-proven chipset provider to offer both Fixed Bit Map (FBM) and Dual Bit Map (DBM) technologies to alleviate crosstalk problems. Centillium's CopperFlite ADSL chipset will give us the competitive edge we are looking for as we launch our DSL product line in the Japanese market."
"Centillium is the proven leader in Japan's ADSL market," said Shahin Hedayat, President, General Manager of Access Business Unit, Centillium Communications, Inc. "Because of our leadership in driving the Annex C standard development, and because we are the first and only ADSL chipset maker with field-proven products that conform to the standard, customers like Lucent know they can count on us to help them deliver the best of what DSL offers in Japan."
