SIEMENS SELECTS CENTILLIUM'S ENTROPIA CHIP FOR DEPLOYMENT IN ITS ACCESSION INTEGRATED ACCESS PLATFORM Entropia Delivers Highest Integration, Highest Density, Low- Power Consumption Voice Over Packet Solution to Bridge Circuit-Switched and Packetized Voice Networks FREMONT, Calif.,
November 13, 2000 - Centillium Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: CTLM), innovator of broadband communications technology, today announced that Siemens Carrier Networks, LLC, a subsidiary of Siemens Information and Communication Networks, Inc.- a leading provider of integrated voice and data networks - has selected Centillium's Entropia chip for deployment in its Accession integrated access platform. Accession is a next-generation integrated Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer/ Digital Loop Carrier (DSLAM/DLC) and an element of Siemens' SURPASSú hiA family of carrier-class access gateways that provide voice and data access to the next generation packet-based networks.
Entropia is a high performance, high value communications engine that performs vital telephony and network processing functions to help bridge the PSTN and packet-based networks. Entropia utilizes Asynchronous Transfer Mode Adaptation Layer 1 (AAL1) and AAL2 in conjunction with a complete suite of telephony functions to bridge traditional POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) voice, fax, and modem calls from the PSTN to data-optimized packet networks. Entropia's rich feature set includes compression, echo cancellation, tone detection and generation, voice activity detection (VAD), silence insertion descriptor (SID) support, and comfort noise generation (CNG). Entropia offers the highest level of integration and density coupled with a capacity of 336 voice channels per chip when simultaneously using PCM, AAL1 echo cancellation, VAD, SID, and CNG.
"Siemens' Accession paves the evolutionary path toward voice and data convergence by supporting both traditional narrowband and emerging broadband services on one platform," said Dr. Mohan Kinra, Director of Convergence Products, Centillium Communications, Inc. "Centillium's Entropia provides the pivotal link between these otherwise disparate networks, positioning our company at the center of convergence," added Babu Mandava, General Manager of Centillium's Network Business Unit.
"Our Accession products are designed to help carriers ease the transition from traditional circuit-based telephone networks to the packet-based networks of the future," said Stuart van Houten, Director, Broadband Access Business Unit, Siemens Carrier Networks LLC. "Entropia is a perfect complement for our Accession integrated access platform, which is designed to support both broadband and narrowband services with a single piece of equipment. Entropia offers the highest integration, highest density, feature-rich voice signal processing on a space- and energy-saving platform. This single chip solution enables Accession to serve high-density access gateway applications in next-generation packet-based networks. Entropia makes sense for our customers who are looking for revenue-ready networks."
