CENTILLIUM INTRODUCES FIRST USB ADSL MODEM CHIPSET TO OPERATE AT FULL 8-MBPS WITHOUT EXTERNAL POWER

Supports PCI, mini-PCI, and CardBus Interfaces in Consumer and Business Markets

FREMONT, Calif., May 31, 2000 - Centillium Communications today announced the immediate availability of the multi-mode Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) Flite™ Optimizer™ chipset. Flite Optimizer is the first multi-mode ADSL chipset solution to feature a highly integrated Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface, which eliminates the need for an external modem power supply, even at maximum bandwidth within full-rate ADSL specifications.

Flite Optimizer integrates related PC-centric-Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) interfaces, Mini-PCI, CardBus, and USB interface. It also supports voice-over-Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) for uncompressed toll-quality voice services.

With no external controllers (USB, PCI) memory or Voltage Control Crystal Oscillator (VCXO) requirements, Flite Optimizer allows manufactures to design and build CPE with fewer components. This results in higher assembly yields and reduces Bill of Material (BOM) costs by approximately 25 percent compared with existing platforms (modems). With Flite Optimizer, equipment makers can meet the pricing demands of cost-sensitive market segments.

"Centillium's Flite Optimizer solution with integrated USB and PCI interfaces breaks through performance barriers by supporting full-rate ADSL service at 8Mbps without the need for external power" said Kimberly Funasaki, Sr. Research Analyst, IDC. "This technological innovation enables service providers to address a broader range of customers including the SOHO and residential markets, with the flexible provisioning of both full-rate and G.lite services."

Centillium Flite Optimizer Solution
Centillium's Flite Optimizer chipset delivers a complete Multi-Mode ADSL modem with just two chips, significantly reducing the form factor, power-usage, component count, and BOM costs normally associated with broadband access devices.

In Full-Rate ADSL mode, Flite Optimizer enables end users to connect to the Internet at speeds up to 8 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream, depending on the loop and the reach conditions. In G.lite ADSL mode, Flite Optimizer supports connection rates up to 1.5 Mbps downstream, and up to 512 kbps upstream. Interoperability with both Full-Rate and G.lite central office equipment has been verified in multi-vendor environments, due to compliance with both G.992.1 and G.992.2 ITU standards.

he Flite Optimizer also supports the requirements of the Japanese ADSL market, making it the only proven and deployed solution that supports both Japan and the rest of world on a single platform. By integrating Annex C support, Centillium provides CPE manufacturers with flexibility, enabling them to design a modem solution for global markets.

The highly flexible Flite platform makes it easy for DSL systems manufacturers to design CPE for both mass-consumer and business markets. Flite Optimizer dramatically reduces hardware engineering and software development efforts by including a suite of reference designs, system code, and software for turnkey designs.

The new Flite Optimizer chipset also helps reduce the need for infrastructure investment by service providers. Flite Optimizer interoperates with every type of ADSL equipment that can be found in a central office, including G.lite and Legacy Full-Rate DSLAMs. This allows service providers to leverage their existing network infrastructure for higher profitability.

Availability
The Centillium Flite Optimizer CPE chipset is available for sampling immediately. Part numbers are as follows: CT-L52SP81 conforms to G.992.2 and G.992.1 Annex A; CT-L62SU81 conforms to G.992.1 Annex A and G.992.2 Annex A and C.
